Benefits of Using Natural Grooming Products

Melissa Becker

The VIR brand started with an idea. To make high performing, natural products. Our products are free of sulfates, parabens, alcohol, fillers, and artificial ingredients. They are also vegan, cruelty free, and recyclable. We are passionate about creating products that are healthy for people and healthy for the environment. So why should you use natural products?

Natural hair care products have become more popular as consumers try to balance their needs with protecting the environment and using fewer chemicals. Nowadays, there are a variety of options available when it comes to different kinds of natural and organic hair care products. The transition into using natural products is easy since a lot of these products can perform even better than traditional products that contain chemicals.

There are many benefits to using natural products. Here are just a few!

1.) Healthier for the consumer - many people are sensitive to chemicals and artificial fragrances. You might even get a reaction from using these types of products such as a headache, rash, or inflammation. Even if you don't get a physical reaction but you're worried about the long-term effects on your health, it's a good idea to steer clear of as many chemicals as possible and use clean products.

2.) Better for the environment - organic farming eliminates the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers which all have a destructive effect on our water, soil, and health.

3.) Less irritation - without harmful chemicals, artificial colors or other biproducts, there are fewer ingredients that are likely to cause skin irritation.

4.) Natural fragrance - traditional products contain chemicals to artificially freshen the smell of the product. Natural and organic products have a natural, pleasant smell and are scented with oils.

5.) No animal testing - cruelty free.

6.) High performing products - natural ingredients used to get a bad reputation for not being as effective as their lab-driven counterparts, but that's a misconception. With new, high-tech extraction processes and innovative compounds, plant-based active ingredients are now easy to find in natural products.

7.) Bottled in recyclable packaging - better for the environment.

Beard Envy

Melissa Becker

Over 50% of men have beards and over 50% of women love it! According to the Huffington Post, it takes 67 days to grow the perfect beard. After taking all that time to grow your awesome beard, you might wonder how to maintain it. Here are some great tips on how to keep your beard shaped and healthy!

First, make sure you are seeing a professional who can shape your beard for you. The most important part of beard shaping is making sure that the sides (on the cheeks) don't get too "poofy or bulky". You want the sides to lay close to the face and the bottom of the beard to grow as long as you want!

After your beard is shaped, you can focus on cleansing, moisturizing, and styling.

I recommend shampooing your beard 2-3 times a week. You don't want to over shampoo or you will dry out your beard hair and the skin underneath. Facial hair is usually very coarse, it is important to use a hydrating shampoo that will moisturize the beard so that the hair lays down and doesn't stick out. There are beard shampoos that you can use, otherwise just a regular hydrating shampoo is great too! We recommend the VIR Men’s Natural Daily Hydrating Shampoo.

Beard oils are a great leave-in conditioning product for beards. The best beard oils penetrate and soften the beard hairs. Some beard oils just sit on top of the hair and add shine. These oils do not do as good of a job of moisturizing and softening. Apply your beard oil once a day, ideally right after you shower when your beard is damp, not wet.

When looking for the perfect beard styling product, you're looking for one that is conditioning and has a low to medium amount of hold. Each balm, wax, and pomade are different. You'll have to read the label, touch the product, and ask a professional to help you figure out which product fits your specific beard needs. Here are some tips to help you find the best beard product for you.

If your beard is thick and coarse - you need a thicker product that can control your beard. You'll also need your product to be conditioning to smooth down your beard. If your beard is really unruly you might want to consider using two products. First, a flexible styling product that you can blow dry into your beard to create shape. Second, a low hold product with a natural to high amount of shine for a polished look.

If your beard is finer and less coarse - you need a product that isn't as thick, something a little finer. You don't have as much hair to control so you don't need a thick, heavy product. You just need something to tame a few unruly hairs and add moisture and shine. If your beard lays well by itself, you might be able to get away with using a beard oil as your styling product. Some hair products are appropriate for beards so try using a little bit of the product you put in your hair on your beard and see if it works!

So you picked out the perfect shampoo, oil, and styling product. Now, how do you style your beard?

Whether your using a balm, wax, or pomade usually a dime to nickel size (depending on the thickness of your beard) is a good amount. Apply the product to your whole beard when the hair is dry. If you blow dry your beard, you can do that before you apply product or after you apply a flexible styling product. Some beard products are too thick to blow dry. A light to medium hold cream is perfect for blow drying. Whether your blow drying your beard or just combing it in place, I recommend using a Denman brush or a boars hair bristle brush. Be careful when using a brush on a short beard because it could irritate the skin. Aggressive brushing can also create split ends. Gentle, daily brushing is good! It softens your beard because it distributes your natural oils through the hair. Combs are another great tool for styling beards. Make sure you're using a comb that doesn't snag on your beard and cause breakage. The wide tooth part of the comb is great for your beard and the narrow teeth are good for your mustache.

That's it!

You're all done! You've shampooed, oiled, and styled your beard like a pro!

Now you are the beard envy of all your friends!

Remember, there are a multitude of options when it comes to styling your beard. For more information and tips ask your stylist or visit YouTube for beard styling tutorials!

Healthy Hair, Definitely Care!

Melissa Becker

Like your car, your hair needs maintenance! Here are some great ways to keep your hair and scalp healthy year around!

A professional shampoo will cleanse your hair without removing too many of the natural, essential oils. This is good because if you're removing too many of these oils, you could dry out your hair and scalp. Generally, professional products use gentler surfactants and higher quality ingredients that produce true results. Also, sometimes drugstore brand products can be watered down, where they are too thin and won't perform or they can be loaded with heavy ingredients, that will weigh down your hair and make it feel greasy. This is how they can afford to sell their products at such an affordable price. Another thing to take into consideration is the guarantee. Salons and stylists will recommend the best cleansing and conditioning products for your hair and scalp. If you get them from the drugstore you're on your own!

Think about conditioner as a lotion for your hair. When damaged, your hair's outer layer starts to stick out looking rough and dry. Conditioner smooths down that outer layer so your hair looks tame, soft, and healthy again! It also helps with the manageability of your hair, detangling, and protecting it from blow drying, the sun, and anything else that can be damaging. Also, if your shampoo is removing a lot of the essential, natural oils from your scalp, conditioner is a great way to add moisture back into your hair. There are lighter conditioners on the market so you don't have to worry about it weighing down your hair. If you really don't want to use a conditioner make sure you're using a professional moisturizing shampoo so that you're still getting the hydrating benefits! We recommend the VIR Men’s Natural Daily Hydrating Shampoo. This shampoo will give you all the benefits of using a professional, gentle shampoo and hydrating conditioner in one!

Shampoo can strip away your hair's nourishing oils along with the grease and product buildup. You need these oils to keep your hair and scalp hydrated. If you strip away too many of these natural oils it can cause dry hair and scalp. Most guys, in this case, will start using an anti-dandruff shampoo thinking they have dandruff. However, all they need to do is shampoo less often and add in a conditioner, if they are not using one. Having at least 1-2 days to build up the natural oils on your scalp is ideal. Of course, it's different for all hair types. If your hair is finer, you might only be able to go one day in between shampooing but if you have thicker, coarser hair you might be able to go 3-4 days.

Regular haircuts can keep your hair healthy, shaped and eliminate split ends. Even if you're growing your hair out, it is important to get regular trims to prevent the dead, split ends from splitting farther up your hair strand. This can cause more breakage and potentially hair loss.

The condition of your hair can be a reflection of the overall health of your body. Make sure you are drinking enough water, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, sleeping well and reducing stress. All of these things can affect your hair. Living well will also increase the rate of hair growth.

A lot of guys get their hair colored. DIY, at home chemical services that come in a box from the drugstore, can be very convenient but they can also be drying and damaging to the hair. Stylists use professional color that not only lasts longer but also moisturizes the hair and adds shine.

During the winter and in dry climates men tend to struggle more with dry scalp. Even if you're doing everything right, unfortunately, sometimes it still happens. I recommend using a professional, hydrating mask on the hair 1-2 times a week. This will put moisture back into your hair and scalp. Most masks are more moisturizing then conditioners. Anti-dandruff shampoos are another good option. I recommend using these 1-2 times a week depending on how dry your scalp is. Most anti-dandruff shampoos have an active ingredient called Zinc Pyrithione, which if overused can cause dry scalp. Make sure you're following your stylist's instructions to get the most out of your products!

Blow drying your hair can help you create great styles! But keep an eye on how hot the heat is on your blow dryer. Extra hot air can cause breakage. Medium heat is usually perfect. Using a conditioner and styling products can help protect your hair from the heat of the blow dryer. Also, giving your hair a day off from blow drying, every once in a while, is great too!
